Dr. Alex Brolo obtained both his undergrad and MSc degrees from the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil). The M.Sc. project, supervised by Dr. Marcia L. A. Temperini, involved the utilization of both electrochemical methods (rotating disk electrode, linear sweep polarization, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry) and surface spectroscopy (surface fluorescence spectroscopy) for the characterization of corrosion inhibitors. Dr. Brolo moved to Canada in 1993 and obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo - Department of Chemistry with Dr. Donald E. Irish. In Waterloo, Dr. Brolo applied the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique to the in situ studies of electrochemical processes. Between 1998 and 2000, Dr. Brolo was a post-doctoral fellow working on a joint project with Dr. Peter Norton (University of Western Ontario) and Dr. John Hepburn (University of British Columbia). In this project, he studied the decomposition of water from Zr surfaces using ultra-high vaccum, surface science techniques and laser ionization spectroscopy (resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization- REMPI). Dr. Brolo started as an assistant professor at UVic in 2001 and was promoted to associate professor in 2006 and to full professoor in 2011. Dr. Brolo's current research is geared towards the study of molecules adsorbed on metallic nanostructures that support the phenomenon of surface-plasmon resonance. He is interested in the photonic characteristics of those structures and on their application in laser-based spectroscopic techniques.
